From mid-March, GCDA was asked to work with Lewisham Local around the food emergency response in the borough as part of our Be Inspired programme, with a particular focus on facilitating surplus supply coordination for community projects. A Lewisham surplus food hub is now operating twice-weekly (Tuesdays and Friday) at The Barn, Phoenix, Green Man. Our GCDA colleague Laura Tilbury, is managing distribution with support from the fantastic Phoenix housing ops teams. Around 1.5 tonnes of surplus food per week is being redistributed to community projects, who in turn are sharing this with their beneficiaries. Since 17th March we have so far redistributed almost 10 tonnes of surplus food. Approximately 1,500 households are now benefitting (and in addition approximately 200 NHS staff a day). Incredibly, this scheme has been set up and is being overseen by GCDA’s Livia La Camera who has been in Italy since before lockdown helping to look after her sister and mother. Geographic boundaries are no hindrance for GCDA staff!
