Many people may be able to exercise outside more than they did a few weeks ago, but current guidelines on social distancing mean our Be Inspired group walking programme (which is funded by Lewisham Council) has had to be totally re-imagined. Jenny Budd who co-ordinates Lewisham Healthy Walks refused to be defeated by Covid-19 and within week she and her team had embraced new Zoom technology to allow them to reach out to others. Some of the virtual classes are now clocking up to 18 people per session.
“I was heartbroken when I realised our group activities would have to be suspended due to Covid-19. Many of our participants are older people and I knew their physical and mental health would suffer if we couldn’t find a way of staying in touch. We decided to embrace new technology and offer a range of virtual walks, indoor exercise classes and Nordic walking experiences via Zoom. It’s been a steep learning curve, but everyone has shown a real willingness and determination to make it work. Whether you’re having to self-isolate at home or are still able to go outside for your daily exercise at a social distance, you can have company via your phone, i-pad or computer. There’s also an exercise sheet available for people who can’t get on-line.”
