Donations have been flooding in to help support a fantastic new community food crisis initiative based at GCDA friends’ The Hill Station Café in Telegraph Hill. An initial target of £5000 was quickly surpassed as a crowd-funding campaign with JustGiving saw pledges come in from all over the country to get the free food parcel scheme up and running.
400 volunteers have put their hands up to help pack and deliver boxes which are initially going to feed 45 families identified by local schools as being in desperate need. All the volunteers involved are being trained in kitchen hygiene and packing/delivery protocols, whilst local nutritionists (with support from GCDA) have developed recipes that can be used to cook with the ingredients in the box.
Sharon Shamir who’s one of the organisers says. “Our fundraiser to roll out free food boxes met its initial target of £5,000 within four days. A week on and we’re now nearing £16,000 once anonymous donations and Gift Aid is factored in. We’ve teamed up with We Give to take on surplus and I’ve learnt how many pints of milk I can fit in my car! We’re so grateful for everyone’s generosity.”
